Earlier today news broke of Yu Darvish signing a 6 year contract with the Cubs. I’m very excited about this addition to the team. It solidified the Cubs starting pitching rotation. What will 2018 bring?
The signing of Darvish to me was a great signing. One of the better pitchers in baseball. 6 years, 126 million is what he agreed upon with the Cubs. This is good in 2 ways, that’s a pretty solid deal for the type of pitcher he is. The other reason is that the Cubs are still spending money to make the team better. With pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training next week, the Cubs are in great shape with their staff. The addition of Darvish capped a solid off-season for the cubs in all aspects of the team. I felt they took care of the main problems they had, pitching. Adding 2 solid starting pitchers to their rotation, and hopefully filling holes in the bullpen that have been a problem for a few years.
With the 2018 rapid season rapidly approaching, where do the Cubs sit? With Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo on your team, you usually have a good shot and being very good. Javy Baez, Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell, Willson Contreas, and Albert Almora are all on the team as well. All of those guys have very good talent and really bolster the squad. Don’t forget about Jon Lester, Yu Darvish, Jose Quintana and Kyle Hendricks, who was a Cy Young candidate last year. These 4 in the starting rotation can be very very deadly if they all pitch the way their capable of. The Cubs are coming into the season as being the favorite to win their division. Only the Cardinals and Brewers have a chance to win the division, and they don’t really have that much of a chance if you ask me. So with that said, they are a for sure favorite to be one of the top teams in the National League for the 4th straight year in a row. The Dodgers and Nationals are probably the only teams that stand in the way of the Cubs of making the World Series for the 2nd time in 3 years. They beat the Nationals in the playoffs last year, but then ended up falling to the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series in 5 games. They got their ass handed to them.
With the National League being rather weak in comparison to the American League and the Cubs division being rather weak again, look for the Cubs to make another deep run in the playoffs. I can’t say if they’ll win it all this year because of teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians and Astros. All of those teams are loaded with talent. But so are the Cubs, and they have a very good shot at winning it all this year.
